As this year’s PHUSE US Connect 2021 (June 14 - 18) draws near, I can’t help but reflect on such conferences in previous years - the face-to-face conversations, the new and lasting friendships made, and the beers.

I hope those days return very soon but, until then, I intend to make the most of the current format - and rejoice at avoiding the tiredness in the feet and legs that usually accompanies big conferences.

There are many positive aspects to the online conference, and d-wise is very proud to be sponsoring the event. Having a video library of all presentations and posters is an amazing asset to be used during the conference and afterwards. Being able to create my own timetable around the presentations I wish to see is also a big plus factor. The conference runs for a week (Monday to Friday) with a rest day in the middle (Wednesday) which you can use to catch-up on work, or watch a bunch of the on-demand videos.

Fyi, the PHUSE organisation is currently in the middle of moving the 2020 videos from the event platform into the PHUSE Archive, so they are currently unavailable at the time of this post.

I’ll be attending the Tuesday afternoon panel discussion entitled Transformation of the Statistical Programmer Role within Modern SCEs. With a range of participants, including d-wise’s Chris Decker, it promises to be informative and thought-provoking. I’ll also be tuning-in for the SCE Whitepaper session on Thursday afternoon, led by GSK and Janssen, as it centers on my own focus - delivering the ability to manage and analyse clinical data in an optimal fashion. As Solution Owner for Aspire at d-wise, my team and I spend our waking hours defining, developing, and delivering coherent products that work together, through the open Aspire framework, to meet this goal.

d-wise has contributed a number of papers this year, all of which are founded on the knowledge and experience we gain from serving global pharma companies, large and small. These are an ideal choice to select from the on-demand library.

Be sure not to miss:

  • DH01 Hydrating a Data Lake to Power Innovation – Enabling Pharmaceutical Companies to Automate Data De-identification for Secondary Use
  • SD03 Quantified Risk Assessment & Anonymization in One! Blur 2.5: New Features
  • SD06 Building an SCE that Users Want to Use
  • TT12 SimSCE: Building an SCE City to Support My Process (co-presented by me, with Chris Decker)

Chris and I wish we could be in a room with an audience to present our SimSCE paper, but you can at least send us your questions via the channels that PHUSE makes available. So, please do watch our paper (available from the on-demand library throughout the conference) and send us your thoughts, opinions, questions and challenges. Conferences are all about the people and the interactions between them; despite COVID-19, we can still make sure we achieve that interaction if you send us your questions.

And so, I’m looking forward to PHUSE US Connect heartily. I’ll be making good use of the app to keep in touch with old friends, and to reach out to new contacts. I hope you’ll be doing the same. I look forward to chatting with you and sharing a virtual coffee.
